Split editors, the command palette and the outline
Work on up to three files side by side, run any command from the palette, jump to symbols with the outline, and clear the screen with zen mode.
Side by side
Open a file next to the one you're in with Ctrl+\\ (or right-click a file → Open to the side). You can have up to three editor groups, side by side or stacked — drag a tab onto the left, right, top or bottom edge of a group to split there, or drop it in the middle to move it. Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2 and Ctrl+3 move between groups. Each group keeps its own tabs; the same file can be open in two groups at once and both stay in step, live edits included.
Drag the thin line between groups to resize them. The layout is remembered for this project in this browser. On phones there is one group, and swiping the path bar sideways moves between tabs.
The command palette
F1 or Alt+P opens the palette. What you type first decides what it searches:
>— every command (save all, format, split, zen, settings…), with the ones you used last at the top:— go to a line (:42)@— the symbols in this file (functions, classes, headings)#— the symbols across the project- anything else — files by name, the same as Ctrl+P
Tabs
A single click opens a file in a preview tab (its name in italics) that the next single click replaces — editing the file or double-clicking it keeps it open. Turn that off in Editor settings → Preview tabs. Pin a tab from its right-click menu to keep it at the front; Alt+Shift+T reopens the last tab you closed. The menu also closes the tabs to the right or every saved tab.
Outline and breadcrumbs
Alt+Shift+O opens the Outline — the file's functions, classes and headings, in order; click one to go there. The path bar above the code is clickable too: a folder lists its files, and the last part lists the file's symbols.
Zen mode and word wrap
Alt+Z hides everything but the code. Press it again (or Esc) to come back. Alt+W turns word wrap on or off for the file you're in.
Shortcuts are yours
Every shortcut above can be changed in Editor settings → Shortcuts (Ctrl+,). Press the keys you want; KODEO tells you if they're taken. Avoid Ctrl+Alt combinations — on many keyboards outside the US they type characters (AltGr).
